According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes affects 29.1 million people or 9.3 percent of the population and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. The CDC also states that diabetes can be treated and managed by healthful eating, regular physical activity and medications to lower blood glucose levels.
